5 clouds → 1
The situation
Volt Europa is a pan-European political movement with 38,000 members and an IT team of around 50 volunteers. Its applications were spread over five cloud providers, including OVH, Hetzner and AWS.
What we built
- A technical vision for consolidation, which I co-authored, and the migration off OVH, Hetzner and AWS.
- A move between European providers: the whole Kubernetes environment went from OVH to Scaleway in one week in late 2025, with the same manifests and tooling. During the move we restored the databases point-in-time from backups, so the recovery route has been used for real.
- One Kubernetes cluster on Scaleway, running around 35 applications.
- Logto as the first identity provider for all 38,000 members, with two-factor login and single sign-on across GitLab, Antragsgruen, Zammad and the CRM.
- Upstream contributions to Antragsgruen, the motion and amendment tool: a generic SSO plugin, twelve-factor support and OpenTelemetry instrumentation, all merged.
What it delivered
Volt’s infrastructure bill dropped by 40% against what the five providers cost, every member has one login, and the movement runs almost entirely on European infrastructure. Changing provider is now a week’s work, and the volunteer IT team runs the platform day to day.
